Courage

You don’t mention it until it’s too late. It’s one of those things that you may think to yourself, but never reveal it until after the event. It takes a special person to battle their way through cancer and a variety of illnesses, and still have a positive outlook on life. Still be able to be the frighteningly clever, funny and positive person, and still find time to idle on IRC and let us know how he’s doing in the hospital.

Sadly, however, Simon lost the battle in his sleep on Saturday night. He will be missed, part of the life and soul of #linux, one of the bright lights in the Glasogw Linux social fabric, an enthusiastic photographer, and most of all, our friend. You’ll be missed Morner. Sleep well.

NES Flickr Photos

cimg5915 There’s a new set of photos up, from the various nights out over Christmas and New Year. I’ve also put together the NES Flickr pool, to which others can submit as well.

Shopping and puppies!

DSC00303 DSC00001

Our wedding list will be online soon, just follow the links above to the wedding stuff :-)

After the shopping fun, we went over to Elwells to have a look at the puppies and to prepare for looking after them tomorrow evening. So small, so cute, so lovely…

Birthday

Well, it’s been and gone for another. A big thank you to all those that conspired against me to keep me in the dark about my surprise. Charlotte, Michelle, my parents, my boss, all of you :-)

On Friday evening I found myself heading towards the airport for a long weekend in Dublin. Charlotte had done all the work, and Michelle had sorted out accommodation in the Hilton for us. It was absolutely stunning, even down to the cake in the hotel room when we checked in. I still don’t know what to say - it was great. Thanks everyone :-D

AC Servicing

Time has been spent, blood has been spilt, and sweat has been perspired. The AC is almost ready to be MOTed. What seems to be one of the rarest reversing light switches on the planet has been sourced and obtained, and has been dispatched with the car to be threaded and fitted appropriately. The fuel tank is unfortunately leaking like a sieve, and will be fixed in some way or another. All being well, it’ll be legally out on the road in a couple of weeks :-D

A big thank you to Gordon and Willie, whom without their help it would be nowhere near the almost roadworthy state it is in now. Cheers!

Parteh

Met up with Sandy and Ellen at The Cave, before heading out to a housewarming party the other day. Left around 1ish, as we were knackered, but Sandy and Ellen stayed to continue their night of partying :-)

SMART

Sods law isn’t it… You spend half an hour or so prodding and persuading SMART to monitor the hard disks in all your critical machines, only to find that the machine with the oldest (and thus most likely to die) hard drive doesn’t support SMART. Thankfully it’s just the router, which can be replaced at short notice. They’ve all been enabled with full attribute logging and autosave, online collection, daily and weekly testing. This should hopefully keep an eye on the ever increasing number of disks used within my machines. I’ve also enabled it on Lovelace, our shared server, for added security.

In other news, I’m just back from a weeks holiday on the continent. Mostly spent in Strasbourg, but we also managed to squeeze in a visit to Dave in Utrecht. Photos and a writeup will be up shortly (along with a Barcelona writeup too, I guess :-)

Criminals! Everywhere!

PTPM has an amusing followup to the news of a rambler getting hunted down by the police over a period of three months in order to give him an official warning about wild berry picking. How much more time and money will the police waste on stupid reports such as these?

Team meeting

Friday was the day of the Network Team Meeting. Got into work as usual at around 8am (there’s nothing like getting a lift in every morning to make sure you don’t bend flexitime all the way to 10am), did the morning duties and headed over to Central Quay. Meeting ensued, lunch followed and then we were in the pub by 3pm. It’s all a blur, but I do remember drunkenly asking Fearghas many work related things, which somehow ended up in a request for lingerie freebies for his wife from Charlotte… Yep, still really enjoying NES :-p
