A recent discussion on IRC has prompted this. At the least, it’s a shout out to Adam Sampson, who usefully provided all the info required in order to monitor your electricity usage by your home PC.
I’ve been monitoring my electricity usage since the begininning of December, using the same hardware that Adam describes on his web page. The only difference being in readmeter.c, where he suggests monitoring port 0x80, but it should be 0x20 in order to watch the ACK pin. Big thanks to Gordon for that bit of information. Gordon also wrote up lovely bit of PHP that displays the current power usage in almost real time.
For those that are curious, the spikes in the graphs at night are due to the night store heating that we have in the flat. One day we’ll get rid of it, but for now it’s here to stay.
