More progress

It’s been a busy few days, whilst I’ve had some time off. The Land Rover is progressing, slowly but surely. Bill has come up with a list of things that need done and/or purchased, and I’ve started making it happen. The roof has been loosened off all around the Land Rover, in order to lift the front of the roof up and slide the bulkhead and windscreen upwards and outwards. This also requires all the wiring to be disconnected, steering column, cabin heating system, and the like. So far I have the floorbox and footwell floor out (from a week or so ago), and I got the heater matrix disconnected and removed today. The coming week will see the wiring labelled and disconnected, and then we should be really getting somewhere. Also on the cards for the next 8 weeks is the purchase and assembly of a new glazed and ready-to-go door top, and associated bottom. This will accompany my other new door down to the folks that are doing the chassis swap.

The TR6 has been victim of procrastination and indecision on my part. I finally made my mind up today, and have decided to get hold of a completely new rocker shaft, arms, springs, and bits. The current one is usable, with some TLC and gentle driving. But for the sake of 90 quid, and a few hours work, it’ll put my mind at ease when driving in the mountains around Europe. The carburretion willalready be skewiff up there, I’ll have enough stuff to worry about. The top end oil feed kit will also make things run a bit smoother for the new parts too.

To cap it all off, the ESC for my model plane lost some of the magic smoke, and the motor is playing up. The local shop has taken it back and is waiting for an engineer to have a look at it. On a whim, I bought a USB cable for my transmitter, so I could hook it into the computer for some training applications. The Futaba trainer socket is loose and intermittent, and the T/X is 1 month beyond the warranty. Magic.

TR6 Progress

After a slight hiatus, progress has been made on the TR6. Last Saturday, I managed to head out to the garage and get the fuel pump changed, along with the pipework to the carburettors. Instead of solid pipework snaking around the rocker cover and being held in place by a bracket attached to the thermostat, it’s now shiny braided hose (originally bought for the AC), secured in place with P-Clips.

My dad had taken the time to remove the old rocker cover, clean the head, and fit the new gasket and rocker cover. It looks the part, and I just need to clean up the block now :-)

Also on the completed list are the seat rails. Bill had come out for a catchup, so he devised a cunning method of replacing the rivnut in the floor with a welded in replacement. This allowed the seat rail to be bolted down correctly and finished off. I just need to fabricate a plate for the control rod latch on the seat rail, and all will be good.

This Saturday afternoon was spent fitting the new ignition coil, distributor cap and HT leads. Last week I’d cleaned and adjusted all the spark plugs but it still ran rough today. Somehow… all the plugs were still set wrongly. Readjusted them, and all 6 cylinders fire nicely :-)

The smooth(er) running highlights one other issue. The rockers need adjusted.

Stage 2

Well, it’s hit a little obstacle in the project timeline. After preparing the Land Rover for the upcoming chassis swap by Sundown Farm, we called them up to book a time. Earliest time available is February 2009 :-)

In the meantime, work will continue on the TR6, and I’ll try and spend some time replacing the seatbox and floor panels on the Land Rover.

Stage 1

Stage 1 of Many was completed tonight. The Land Rover finally had various items removed before it gets sent off to some nice people who are going to replace the chassis on it. It’s been a long time coming, but as the photographs show, it’s desperately needed.

TR6 Exhaust

Finally got the exhaust of the TR6 fixed. A bit of a hassle it was, as the corrosion had rusted a hole in around one of the rear mounts. The whole rear section had to be cut off, done a week or so ago by Gordon, and then over the course of a few nights I trimmed off the bad metal and welded in a patch. Today was the big day as the exhaust was mounted back on, this time using a home made connector, and sealed up with Gun Gum and a Gun Gum bandage around the joint. After half an hour of idling, we had a toasty warm exhaust with no holes in it. Job done :-)

Comic effect

Is watching a nedmobile get pulled over by two foot patrol policemen who saw them floor it from the lights down the road up towards them. Bonus points for stupidity.

Weekend

Just back from my parents with Charlotte. We managed to fit the radiator to the TR6 now, and it successfully retains all the water loaded into it. So far so good. Also went over the parts required to refit the steering column, which should allow us some further progress in the coming weeks.

My dad has been clearing out the loft, which has resulted in the resurfacing of this little gem on the left. A portable Epson PX-4 computer from 1985. It was gifted to me from a friend many years ago, and it was kept as a curio. Something for the collection :-)

TR6

The TR6 radiator came back from the repair shop with a fixed core. A lovely £25 to fix it. Much better than the £150 for a brand new one. Now, I just need to find the right bushes for the steering column.

Life

One of the busiest weeks I’ve had in a long time. The advance base is almost up and running, but we’ve fighting with the new vlans and the voip system for the past few days. After 3 days of what seemed like getting nowhere, the system all magically sprung into life at 5.45pm - Just in time to go to the pub.
Met up with Marie to fix her computer on Tuesday, Neil to discuss a business plan on Wednesday, and Willie to tow his car this evening. Dave and I are heading to the pub tomorrow to celebrate our VOIP over VLAN victory, and Charlotte and I are working on the TR6 on Saturday and at Knockhill on Sunday. Willie and Janet took us out for a very nice meal at the 1901 this evening, and it was good to catch up. Hopefully we can do similar again :-)
