Armadillo misses by inches

Armadillo Aerospace and their Mod-1 lander miss out on the X Prize by mere fractions. The slight oscillation slowly amplified, and unfortunately during landing the sideways motion caused it to tip over. So close, yet so far. Maybe second time round.

The Day The Routers Died…

The Secret Working Group of RIPE 55 find another memorable way to summarize the event :-)

Wedding

I’ve finally got it sorted, and most of the wedding details are up here. Invites will be going out shortly, but in the meantime you can familiarise yourself with the info on the above pages :-)

New Nokia Tablet

Well, first the Nokia 770 tablet was being sold at cut rates in favour of the new 800. I was sorely tempted to get one of the £99 770s as a toy, but just couldn’t justify it to myself (or Charlotte for that matter). The proverbial cat is now out the bag, and Nokia have just announced the release of the new N810. Now I have to ask myself if I can justify a cheap N800 :-)

McDonalds offer free Wi-fi

Hot on the heels of the BT & FON partnership, McDonalds are announcing that they are soon going to offer free wi-fi at the majority of their restaurants by the end of the year. What definition of ‘free’ they are going to use is anyones guess, but it will be interesting to see how it catches on. The article seems to imply that it won’t be pay per hour or per month, so it could either be entirely free and open with just a simple bandwidth limit and possibly time limit, or it could be a time-limited login that gets handed out at the till.

The question still stands though… would you take out your laptop in a McDonalds?

MythTV Remote

For a long time now, our MythTV setup at home has been entirely reliant on the full sized wireless keyboard sitting on the coffee table to control it. I’ve had two Hauppauge Nova-T remotes sitting idle for a long time now, pending me getting my finger out and making them work. Well, it’s finally done. A big thanks to Garry Parker and his MythTV Tips page.

The handheld remote now has full control over the MythTV install, from volume and channel navigation, to menu navigation and playback control. All done through the evdev kernel interface, with a handy smattering of LIRC support.

Birthday

Well, it’s been and gone for another. A big thank you to all those that conspired against me to keep me in the dark about my surprise. Charlotte, Michelle, my parents, my boss, all of you :-)

On Friday evening I found myself heading towards the airport for a long weekend in Dublin. Charlotte had done all the work, and Michelle had sorted out accommodation in the Hilton for us. It was absolutely stunning, even down to the cake in the hotel room when we checked in. I still don’t know what to say – it was great. Thanks everyone :-D
