Extreme Trainsurfer

Just found this video. I think extreme would be the best way to describe it :-)

Flickr search

Just ambling around the internet this morning, from Scud missiles to Jonathan Aitken. I found this gem, a nice Flash interface to Flickr.

HMS Dauntless

Yesterday I took the afternoon off and went to watch the launch of the HMS Dauntless. Anne had gotten us some tickets, and my dad came along as well. The last time I saw a boat being launched I must’ve been about 7 years old. I barely remember it, other than it being inside the assembly hall. Dauntless was launched from the slipway, and there was a nice display from an EH101 beforehand too. Didn’t get too good a view of the ship after it went into the water, but I’ll go for a wander at the weekend and possibly get a picture or two.

Why I Like Linux

I wrote this as a response to a BBC request for 100 words about why you are faithful to Windows, Linux or OSX. Admittedly it’s 169 words, but I sent it anyway and I’ve put it up here for posterity too… Continue Reading »

Criminals! Everywhere!

PTPM has an amusing followup to the news of a rambler getting hunted down by the police over a period of three months in order to give him an official warning about wild berry picking. How much more time and money will the police waste on stupid reports such as these?

Pager data

A week ago, Malcolm was around and I was cooing over his handheld scanner, a nice Alinco DJ-X3. Whilst messing about listening to the local ATC and the like, we happened upon 137.975MHz and wondered “wtf is that?”. A little bit of digging reveals that it’s one of the pager frequencies in Britain, and it can easily be decoded with POCSAG. And there was me thinking that pager transmissions were encrypted in some way, and possibly even secure. One day I’ll have fun with this… :-)

R/C Helicopters

Following my recent attempts at maintaining stable flight with my wee remote controlled helicopter, it occurred to me that it would be significantly easier for a computer to fly it than a human A few minutes on Google returned the ChRoMicro - Cheap Robotic Microhelicopter HOWTO. A great site with information on how to have a robotic micro-helicopter for under 500 Euros. I’ve not quite got that cash to spare these days, but I wouldn’t mind giving it a shot when I do :-)

Electricity meter

A recent discussion on IRC has prompted this. At the least, it’s a shout out to Adam Sampson, who usefully provided all the info required in order to monitor your electricity usage by your home PC.

I’ve been monitoring my electricity usage since the begininning of December, using the same hardware that Adam describes on his web page. The only difference being in readmeter.c, where he suggests monitoring port 0×80, but it should be 0×20 in order to watch the ACK pin. Big thanks to Gordon for that bit of information. Gordon also wrote up lovely bit of PHP that displays the current power usage in almost real time.

For those that are curious, the spikes in the graphs at night are due to the night store heating that we have in the flat. One day we’ll get rid of it, but for now it’s here to stay.
