Mobile Mapping

It’s as if they’ve been reading this blog. TomTom have recently just released their Map Share technology to the general public. Users can now edit their maps with a few clicks, to report back info on closed roads and roadworks. Having not tried it yet, I can’t comment on the flexibility of the software, but it’s certainly a step forward. I can only hope it will automatically calculate one way roads, automatically update rerouted roads and create new roads based on user demand. This data should still be in the public domain and free, courtesy of projects such as OpenStreetmap, but it will be at least a year before OSM becomes usable for the general public.
