My neighbours (one of many, don’t know which one to be precise) has been sitting on my wireless connection for a good few weeks now. I’m not against him doing it, but I’ve started to take some steps to monitor usage of my open network. The first has been to redirect everyone through a transparent proxy, so I can have a rough idea of what’s going on. So far, I’ve been privy to the vast amounts of porn that he downloads. One thing that must be said though, is that the instructions on the aforementioned page are wrong. On step 4, they suggest make a variety of configuration changes to squid.conf. All that is really required is the addition of ‘transparent’ to the http_port directive – http_port 3128 transparent
Ntop has just been installed as well now, so I’ll get an overview of network usage. If it proves to be too much, then I may start considering tweaks to Squid, like Upside-Down-Ternet or some equally random nonsense 🙂
