Pressure groups

Pressure groups annoy me. Little bands of people that manage to exert enough pressure on the government to make them change laws that affect millions of people. One such groups is reFlag. An attempt to redesign the Union Jack to reflect the diverse cultures now living within the UK. Correct me if I’m wrong, but the Union Jack has nothing to do with race or colour, but everything to do with the 3 countries that united to form the United Kingdom. The red cross from the St George of England, the blue saltire from the St Andrew of Scotland, and then, later on in 1801, the red saltire from the St Patrick of Ireland. If anything, the flag should be changed to represent Wales, even though Wales was annexed and became part of the kingdom of England long before the original Union Jack was created. With this history, it’s clear that the Union Jack doesn’t _actually_ have anything to do with race or colour, yet certain misguided people feel that it should be changed so that it does. If it were to be changed, then no doubt it’ll then change every generation or so, as people of different colours want their own representation. To argue further, the Union Jack isn’t even a national flag, it’s a Royal Flag that happens to be used as a national flag.
Quite why these pressure groups go on these crusade for change is beyond me. Maybe they genuinely feel that they can make a difference and feel that they are helping those that are concerned. Maybe they are just out to make a name for themselves. Who knows, but maybe they should just give it a rest and let us get on with our lives, and get on with their own lives.
