Sods law isn’t it… You spend half an hour or so prodding and persuading SMART to monitor the hard disks in all your critical machines, only to find that the machine with the oldest (and thus most likely to die) hard drive doesn’t support SMART. Thankfully it’s just the router, which can be replaced at short notice. They’ve all been enabled with full attribute logging and autosave, online collection, daily and weekly testing. This should hopefully keep an eye on the ever increasing number of disks used within my machines. I’ve also enabled it on Lovelace, our shared server, for added security.
In other news, I’m just back from a weeks holiday on the continent. Mostly spent in Strasbourg, but we also managed to squeeze in a visit to Dave in Utrecht. Photos and a writeup will be up shortly (along with a Barcelona writeup too, I guess ![]()

Well, the French have done it again. On their world class TGV, they’ve hit 574.8Km/h, the worlds fastest wheeled train, and only 6.2Km/h off the fastest recorded train, a Japanese Maglev. It’s an awesome sight, and goes to show the excellent results that can be produced when a country sets its sights on a target. The test was done on the soon to be opened Paris Strasbourg line, which I hope we can take the next time we go to visit Nina and Francis.

Hugh Thompson relates his story of how he managed to crash the in-flight entertainment system with a few well placed keypresses. He goes into the detail behind it, and the amusing outcome of his test case. An amusing read ![]()
