Holidays

It’s Wednesday now, and I’ve spent the past few days getting back into the swing of this thing called ‘work’. Charlotte and I have been off for the past week, in which time we’ve managed to get engaged and do about 75% of the work required in order to renovate the bathroom. It’s mostly complete now, bar some tiling work to be done behind the toilet, sink and door. Wallpaper also has to be applied, and a wee cupboard built behind the sink pedestal.
Sunday evening involved a very nice dinner with Charlotte and Michelle at Khublai Khans, which was followed up by a sausage supper with Michelle on Tuesday. It’s a great life :-)

A Google Maps overlay for Google Earth. Wonderful stuff, what will they think of next?

The Bridge to Nowhere

For a while now I’ve been wondering what the story is behind this structure over the M8. I went asking at the council, and the helpful Marco Bardelli got back to me in record time with the following…

Subject: RE: Odd footbridge in Anderston
From: “Bardelli, Marco”

Thanks for your email. The footbridge which is now in the ownership of the Scottish executive has never been open to pedestrians. As far as I am aware it was designed to link up with some never-completed phase of the Anderston Centre and I presume connect to Waterloo Street, as you suggest.

Some time after the motorway was opened a small steel footbridge was built to allow pedestrians to cross North Street near Anderston Cross and even more recently this was superseded by a pelican crossing. All this would have been avoided if only they had finished the footbridge to nowhere…….

It’s always interesting to hear about the urban history. Whether it’s something as mundane as a closed footbridge, to disused railway stations under busy thoroughfares.

Engaged

It’s been an interesting time… On Friday I picked up the ring from Colin, who had been making it for me for the past month or so. A fair bit of research has gone into it and the possible outcomes of the question. Many thanks to Michelle, Kristian, Cecilia and Marie. Also a big thanks to my dad who has been doing a fabulous taxi duty for me, and who has done an admirable job of keeping a secret.
We left early on Saturday and took the slightly less direct route to Dundee, via Coatbridge, Airdrie, Stirling, Perth, Balbeggie, Abernyte and then Dundee. Our destination was the Dundee Hilton, where Michelle had booked us a deluxe double room with a waterfront view, and a window table for dinner. I asked the question in the hotel room, cos I was being lazy and couldn’t be bothered with floods of tears/squeals/bouncing/etc at the dinner table :-) The plan went well, and I had a happy happy Charlotte at the dinner table admiring sparkly thing on her hand at dinner.
After dinner, we headed off to the cinema to see Casino Royale, and what a film it was. I’m quite thoroughly impressed by this take on the Bond Franchise, and hope it continues. Of course, only Charlotte could spot the Donald Duck reference in the film, thanks to the Danish links. Extra bonus points if you can find the link :-)
Sunday was spent wandering around Dundee, and meeting up with Bob for a lunchtime coffee. He’s looking stunning as usual, and quite enjoying his special constable work. :-)

Stuff

It’s been a busy week at work and out of work. Meeting up with the inimitable Ellen a few times, Michelle and Frankie for dinner, working on the flat, calming Charlotte down about her new job :-) It’ll be a bit different for her especially. New job, new area, new car. Doing all the miles in a company car will certainly help, but covering the East Coast of Scotland should be interesting. On the other hand, it’s a job that she’ll love, dealing with products that she genuinely appreciates. I’ve been winding up my stuff at work in preparation for a week off as well, in which we’re going to redecorate the bathroom from floor to ceiling…. well, the ceiling has already been done this week :-)

Birthday

Happy Birthday Michelle!! Another year older and you don’t look a day over 22! Oh wait, you are 22 now, that’s ok then :-) Congratulations :-p

Spamassassin fun

I’ve just set up FuzzyOCR on our shared server, and it looks to be all good. I may consider putting up some spamassassin graphs to see the state of things on the server. Next up could be DomainKeys
