Email… the worlds simplest electronic communication method. Why is that even though I have email that I can retrieve from anywhere in the world with a client, web browser, my phone, etc, I still have issues sending it at times?
At work, I tunnel SMTP over SSH when necessary just to get to my server, and occasionally the tunnel isn’t up and running. Consequently mail gets stored on the laptops local outbox until the next time it can send. Wouldn’t it be great if the laptop had enough intelligence programmed into it to sense my phone sitting next to it.
On shut down of the laptop with mail unsuccessfully sent, it should use a fast network medium, like UltraWideband, to shunt messages across to my mobile device for sending via another channel. I shouldn’t have to manually tell it when to send and when not to, I shouldn’t have to pull up and tear down tunnels. It should all be dynamic. We live in the 21st century with always on connectivity, yet we’re limited by closed thinking and lack of imagination. If I could program, I know what I’d be writing for Kontact right now

How cool is this?
Raid5 Reshaping, for all your Raid5 resizing needs. I loved the rebuild option of Openmanage to dynamically resize your hardware raid array on Dell kit, but with software raid you were limited to raidreconf, which was hairy to say the least. To finally have raid5 rebuilding in mdadm and the kernel is a blessing, and something I’m really looking forward to testing myself.

The holiday confirmation came through from the boss yesterday afternoon, so it was a quick trip off to ba.com to book the flights
Denmark on the 22nd December and then back to Glasgow on the 2nd January. BA is just a tad more expensive than Easyjet or Ryanair, but it’s oh so worth it.

Just back from Ellens after a nice evening with her and Charlotte. She’s got some fantastic work done on her showreel, and the music video work that her and Rodger have done looks amazing. Reminiscing about our times at Absolute Studios, and catching up on life. She’s just back from Berlin with Stevie, and the photographs of the grafitti and latent art talent there are amazing. We’re hopefully going to meet up more often, rather than the ad-hoc monthly chats we have :-p
Came home to find a parcel all the way over from Canada. It was the last bit of my wonderful birthday present from Charlotte. A real, mint copy of the 1997 single Brown Sugar by Akasha. A song that I’ve cherished on cassette tape for almost 10 years, since I first heard it on Mary-Anne Hobbs’ breezeblock. Classic

It has been a busy weekend. Got the work done on the bins, and pressure washed the front and back area for good measure. Charlotte has been busy tearing the bathroom apart in preparation for doing it up, and I’ve finally built the shelving in the loft.
On Saturday night it was Gaenors birthday drinks in the pub, which ended, for me, around 12.30 to the sound of Colin going “Oh no! I have an appointment with a kebab shop… now!”. Happy Birthday Gaenor

Huzza! Two knocks on the door later, and I now have a full complement of signatures for the work to be done on the bins, and 4 offers of help on the day. Lovely

As noted elsewhere, the secret is now out. aKademy2007 is going to be hosted in Glasgow, courtesy of CIS at Strathclyde University. I’m just doing a wee bit to help, but it’s good to see Guadec, Lugradio and Debconf7 as well all happening in Britain this year.

I see the LPI are beta testing their new LPIC-3 exams in the near future. It’ll be a nice compliment to the current 2 levels that are currently in use. It’s going to focus on Samba and LDAP, which I quite enjoy working with anyway. I can see where they’re coming from, with the trend in directory systems and Linux/Windows integration playing a big part. Hey, even Samba v4 is coming with a new and upgraded Vampire to sook the life out of Active Directory.
Now, I should sit my Level 2 exam sometime…

Yep, low water pressure in the G14 area. Scottish Water says there’s a fault somewhere and are investigating it. Maybe some geourl neighbours will get this and spread it on.

Finally getting things sorted out. I’ve chatted to all my neighbours, bar the two that I chat to the most, ironically, and they’ve all signed the agreement to modify the bin enclosure outside. Soon we’ll have an enclosure big enough to accept wheelie bins from the council, instead of the nasty open top ones that the foxes love to raid. When Neil & Donna sign up, my dad and I will remove the bin enclosure tops and put them into the storage area. No more foxes! o/
Oh, and I’ve fixed the stairwell light as well.
