glasgownet.com

I’ve just migrated over from Courier to Dovecot for my IMAP service, after reading this a while ago. It seems to have been a worthwhile change, and the load on the server is less, along with faster retrieval times.
And for those that use the service - no, I won’t be enabling regular non-SSL IMAP.

Friends

We have two friends coming over from Denmark to stay with us for a long weekend tomorrow. Thomas is a Microsoft employee, so I reckon I should put away my vast collection of illicit MS software :-p

People

Ok, so I’m merrily having lunch with Charlotte and Michelle on the steps of St Enoch Square. Nearby are a pair of mildy annoying mothers each with their even more annoying child running around. After a couple of minutes of this, the next thing I hear is the sound of running water… as mother holds youngest female child horizontally whilst she urinates against the wall. Not over 5ft from us. Whilst we’re eating. Whilst everyone is watching. Outside the front door of Greggs.
DO YOU FUCKING MIND?!
I swear to $deity, this town is on a downhill dive. People have no respect for themselves, for others, for their surroundings, for anything. I could kill them. It certainly wouldn’t be a loss to anyone.
Incidentally, this was about 20 minutes after I passed a wrecked drunk sleeping on the verge of the road. From the stench of alcohol, and the rolled up jacket under his head as a pillow, I presume he is there of his own accord and not unwell.

Friends

Went out last night with Charlotte and Michelle to the Òran Mór Kabaret night to see Marie do her stuff. She was absolutely fantastic on stage, not just dancing, but singing as well. The other acts were poor to mediocre, but Marie was just wonderful. She had the final song, and got the rest of the dance troupe and the other acts up on stage dancing as well. Here’s hoping this is just the start of a lot more for her.

Trains

Well, recently I’ve been buying a few model trains to restart my collection after a 13 year gap. Back then, one of my Mk4 Intercity carriages got damaged by a subsurface light when it derailed in a storage facility under the mainboard. Only now have I gotten around to replacing it. These 2 Mk4 carriages arrived today, along with another one yesterday. Now I’ll have a decent rake of 5 carriages for my Intercity liveried Class 90 and 91 to pull, instead of the original 2 plus one heat damaged.
Since we’re hopefully moving flat soon, I’m hoping I can get the space to ressurrect a baseboard, and start building again.

Spamassassin fun

Ages ago, I followed these instructions to get Spamassassin working on Exim4. I never thought about it again, and carried on until recently David told me that lodge wasn’t tagging spam, or doing anything with it. As luck would have it, I was calling spamassassin from .procmailrc, and the spamcheck router was set up _after_ the local delivery routers… Excellent job there.
So, if you’re setting up Spamassassin using the above instructions, just remember to put the directive in an appropriate place. I’d been using Debians split config file setup, and prefixed it with 850, as the documentation suggested. It’s now been set up at 475, and although I may move it around a bit again, it does seem to work _as intended_ now :-p

I really should update this diary properly.
Just over two weeks ago, Kristian and Cecilie came over to visit for a while. It was really good to see them again, and Charlotte managed to get a week off work to show them around Glasgow (they’d never been before). After a while here, they hired a car and went driving up north for about 6 days, and then came back for a few days before heading home. We all had a wonderful time, out and about in Glasgow, and from the sounds of it, they went to more ‘cultural’ places in 6 days than I’ve been to in Glasgow in 6 years. :-)
On Friday, Bob came down to Glasgow to see Ross Nichol and the Mannequins at King Tuts, so we met up with him and Michelle, and headed along too. It was a damn good evening, but unfortunately Bob had to head back to Dundee that evening, so departed around midnight. It was good to see him again.

Ubuntu

I’ve just uploaded my package of k3ddesktop to my archive.
Just put the following into your /etc/apt/sources.list file, and then run apt-get update; apt-get install k3ddesktop
deb http://lodge.glasgownet.com/~bagpuss/Ubuntu/ ./

Hmmmm, nice

After Neil posted a link to a video of Kyle Stacy, I discovered this little howto - the ChRoMicro - Cheap Robotic Microhelicopter HOWTO. Very nice stuff. I’ll stick with a Gumstix module in the boat though.
