I should update this a bit
Been to the cinema to see Blade: Trinity. A good film, nothing fantastic. Not as good as the previous Blades though. Work has been fun, it’s good to have everyone back again and get back into the swing of things.
Useless fact, back in 1930, the BBC had no news to report.

This week, I have mostly been… going to the cinema. Well, it feels like it
Went to see The Polar Express and The Phantom of the Opera this week, both of which are all rather good.
The new server for work arrived the other day, and almost immediately the new UPS for it started moaning about extended overvoltage problems. Now I know why we’re blowing so many lights and PSUs.
Had Michelle around for dinner on Monday evening. It was lovely to see her again, and catch up on all the latest news. Also went off to Jo’s party last night, and met up with a lot of medievalists as well as GUSCDC members.

You know you live in a country with long working hours and horrible weather when your solar powered watch runs out of power…

Pressure groups annoy me. Little bands of people that manage to exert enough pressure on the government to make them change laws that affect millions of people. One such groups is reFlag. An attempt to redesign the Union Jack to reflect the diverse cultures now living within the UK. Correct me if I’m wrong, but the Union Jack has nothing to do with race or colour, but everything to do with the 3 countries that united to form the United Kingdom. The red cross from the St George of England, the blue saltire from the St Andrew of Scotland, and then, later on in 1801, the red saltire from the St Patrick of Ireland. If anything, the flag should be changed to represent Wales, even though Wales was annexed and became part of the kingdom of England long before the original Union Jack was created. With this history, it’s clear that the Union Jack doesn’t _actually_ have anything to do with race or colour, yet certain misguided people feel that it should be changed so that it does. If it were to be changed, then no doubt it’ll then change every generation or so, as people of different colours want their own representation. To argue further, the Union Jack isn’t even a national flag, it’s a Royal Flag that happens to be used as a national flag.
Quite why these pressure groups go on these crusade for change is beyond me. Maybe they genuinely feel that they can make a difference and feel that they are helping those that are concerned. Maybe they are just out to make a name for themselves. Who knows, but maybe they should just give it a rest and let us get on with our lives, and get on with their own lives.

Wahey! the cheapo wireless cards work in Linux. Some serious PCI timing problems, but according to the forums there are various patches that solve this issue. I’m using the card just now ![]()
