A legend

News is just filtering through that John Peel has died of a heart attack whilst on holiday in Peru. I grew up with him on the radio most days, and I’ve come to associate a lot of the music that I like with him and his colleagues. Although I have never met or spoken to him, I still feel a kind of loss that I can’t really explain. He’ll be sorely missed.

glasgownet.com

Finally took the 10 minutes needed in order to fix up the SSL module for Apache on glasgownet.com. I had disabled it ages ago due to a bug in it, and never quite got around to re-enabling it. So, https://glasgownet.com is back up and running, and webmail and phpmyadmin are both running on it now. Webmail and phpmyadmin both used to be available over regular http… this is no longer the case. :-)

Weekend

Went off to the cinema again on Friday, with Charlotte, to see Shark Tale. Was really nice and good, although I don’t think it lived up to the quality of Shrek 1 and 2.
Saturday came and went, and I went out to the parents house to do some work on the BMW. Finally got the springs off with the spring compressors after a bit of a fight. Vanished off home at about 5pm to head out at 7.30pm to a Ceilidh in Edinburgh with Charlotte, Ellen, Roger and some of his friends. The ceilidh was excellent fun, and plenty of money was raised for Carolines adaptive skiing training for the next winter Olympics. After the Ceilidh, we decided to pay a quick visit to Justin, as he was having a party, and then Charlotte and I got the 0130 nightbus home. Ellen called me at 1130 on Sunday morning to tell me that she was just arriving back at her flat after being up all night :-p
_That’s_ what weekends are all about :-)

Active Directory feelings

Mathew Palmer on irm-discuss pretty much sums up how I feel about Active directory in a few succinct words…

AD is LDAP with some extra crack cocaine thrown in for extra excitement (let me tell you though, LDAP does *not* need any extra mind-altering substances, it’s quite well supplied on it’s own).

The Wootang

Just had Micheal Woo around for a chat. It’s been _ages_ since I’ve seen him! Caught up with life, the universe and everything. Good to hear that he’s doing well, and we went out for a drive around town before picking Charlotte up from Maries. Hopefully going to meet up with him again in the next few days.

Friends

Invited Andy and Ellen around for drinks on Tuesday evening. We all stayed in and had a good wee laugh. It’ll be a shame to see Andy head back home to Kent at the end of his contract.

Relaxing day

Had a lovely day yesterday when everyone turned up for the flat-warming party. Many thanks to everyone who turned up and brought presents as well as those who brought presents for my little-publicized birthday a few days ago.
Woke up today with a bit of headache (no, I didn’t drink at all last night), so decided to go for a short walk with Charlotte. That short walk ended up as a trip to Townhead, past The Barras, and then up and over to Necropolis for a stroll around there. We finally made our way back to the flat, and got in about 5 hours after we left :-) . On the way to Townhead, I discovered the Schipka Pass, which I recall reading about ages, and wondering where exactly it was. What an entertaining little place. It appears to have so much history attached to it, and yet the council is likely to pull it down at any time. It’s a shame.
About an hour after getting home Marie and Stephanie called by, and we all vanished off to the cinema to see Resident Evil: Apocolypse. Good no-brainer movie with enough CG to keep everyone happy :-)

Birthday gig

Well, it was my birthday yesterday, and Michelle bought me some tickets for herself, Miranda, Charlotte and I to go to the Avril Lavigne concert at the SECC last night. I’ve never been to an Avril Lavigne gig, or heard her live, but it was a good mix. Fair bit of her popular stuff, followed up by some rather good solo pieces with her on the guitar or the piano. Quite a long gig too, the doors opened at 7pm, support started around 7.45, then Avril appeared at around 9pm and went on until about 10.45pm. All in all, very good. Thank you Michelle! :-)
After the gig, we headed back home, and Charlotte had left out her presents for me along with the cards that had arrived in the post. I’m off to laze about in my new beanbag :-D

Mutt

Everyones favourite mail client…
Found a nice little page about enhancing mutt. Worth a read.

Taxis

Planned to go to GUSCDC this evening, so called a cab for 1955 to pick us up. We head out at 1950 and wait at the corner, nothing appears. 2000, cab pulls up nearby, waves something at us, and then drives off. 2010, we walk to the taxi rank 10 minutes away in the torrential rain and get a cab. God how I love not having a car outside the front door…
