Croft

Got back from Croft Circuit yesterday evening, after a long drive and a busy weekend. A Beetle race each day, each one 3 hour long with pit stops and driver changes every half hour made for some interesting work. The transponder loop doesn’t extend as far as the pit, so cars had to be entered manually each time they went through the pit lane.

We went down to Croft on Friday night, as we had been booked into the lovely Chequers Inn that night and next. It’s been almost a year since we’ve been there, but it was as exemplary as ever :-)

Photos will be, as always, uploaded whenever I get around to it.

SMART

Sods law isn’t it… You spend half an hour or so prodding and persuading SMART to monitor the hard disks in all your critical machines, only to find that the machine with the oldest (and thus most likely to die) hard drive doesn’t support SMART. Thankfully it’s just the router, which can be replaced at short notice. They’ve all been enabled with full attribute logging and autosave, online collection, daily and weekly testing. This should hopefully keep an eye on the ever increasing number of disks used within my machines. I’ve also enabled it on Lovelace, our shared server, for added security.

In other news, I’m just back from a weeks holiday on the continent. Mostly spent in Strasbourg, but we also managed to squeeze in a visit to Dave in Utrecht. Photos and a writeup will be up shortly (along with a Barcelona writeup too, I guess :-)

Weekend

What a weekend that was. On Saturday we went over to Charterhall for a Border Ecosse Car Club rally stage. Having never been to Charterhall, it was surprising to see how fast they get up to on the old runways and taxiways. This, ultimately, was to be my downfall, literally, as a passing car threw a stone a couple of inches across up at about 60mph and caught me across the temple. I don’t recall blacking out, but then again I don’t recall making my way towards the ground… A visit from the event paramedic ensured I was mostly alright, bar a large lump on my head and some bleeding. It also ensured that the stage planners re-jigged the flying finish layout to make sure it didn’t happen again. By stage 4 I was back up and alive again, with a raging headache.

As the day progressed, the wind and dust did wonders to our eyes and made sure we were both unable to open them properly or close them for any length of time. Extreme stinging ensued in both scenarios. We elected to sit in the car and recover after the event, both looking like we’ve just cried our eyes out :-p The trip home was amusing, but thanks to the extreme kindness of the Post Office owner in Greenlaw, we were able to use his bathroom to wash our faces and use some eyedrops that he provided. That did us well for about half an hour, and then the stinging returned to my eyes, after which Charlotte drove the rest of the way home. We both fell asleep around 9pm with wet cloths covering our faces :-)

Sunday was far more sedate, with a 1030 start at the SWTVC autojumble. The weather turned out to be lovely, with a good turnout of people, stallholders and car owners. I hope there was enough to make it viable for next year.

Time well spent

It’s been a busy wee while… not in chronological order. Was in Barcelona for a week for Tom and Mireias wedding (photos coming soon), went to France and Andorra, uploaded photos of a new model I got, been to the Border Counties Rally to do timekeeping on the Redesdale stages, been out in town with West Dental, looked around and decided on a church for the wedding, decided on a venue for the wedding reception, set a date for the wedding, finished tiling the bathroom, been to Dundee for team meeting and drinks with Bob before he sets off to Canada, remangled some aerial cable and now have the secondary MythTV backend online, helped Ellen move flat…

I lose track. I’ve got another full weekend next week, and then we’re off on holiday again. I’ve started using Google Calendar, due it sucking the least out of all the calendars I’ve tried. Maybe I’ll have some luck this time…

Life

One of the busiest weeks I’ve had in a long time. The advance base is almost up and running, but we’ve fighting with the new vlans and the voip system for the past few days. After 3 days of what seemed like getting nowhere, the system all magically sprung into life at 5.45pm - Just in time to go to the pub.
Met up with Marie to fix her computer on Tuesday, Neil to discuss a business plan on Wednesday, and Willie to tow his car this evening. Dave and I are heading to the pub tomorrow to celebrate our VOIP over VLAN victory, and Charlotte and I are working on the TR6 on Saturday and at Knockhill on Sunday. Willie and Janet took us out for a very nice meal at the 1901 this evening, and it was good to catch up. Hopefully we can do similar again :-)
